Counterpleasures
Karmen MacKendrick
(SUNY Press, 1999)
Counterpleasures takes up a series of literary and physical pleasures that do not appear to be pleasurable, ranging from saintly asceticism to Sadean narrative to leathersex. Each is placed in its cultural context to unfold a history of transgressive pleasure and to argue for the value and power of such pleasures as resistant to more totalizing forms of power.-- SUNY Press

Immemorial Silence
Karmen MacKendrick
(SUNY Press, 2001)
"The basic point of the book--to elucidate the dependence of language on silence, time on eternity, love on forgetfulness--is important and is richly articulated. The scholarship is of exactly the right sort: It goes straight at figures such as Augustine, Bataille, Meister Eckhart, Blanchot, and Rimbaud, and addresses them as contemporaries and without any haze of secondary scholarship. MacKendrick ...  has respect but no reverence for the figures she discusses. This book is outstanding."

End of Story:Toward an Annihilation of Language and History

Skeptical Environmentalism:
The Limits of Philosophy and Science
Robert Kirkman
(Indiana University Press, 2002)
"In Skeptical Environmentalism, Robert Kirkman raises doubts about the speculative tendencies elaborated in environmental ethics, deep ecology, social ecology, postmodern ecology, ecofeminism, and environmental pragmatism. Kirkman takes issue with [the idea] that the natural world is fundamentally relational, that humans have a moral obligation to protect the order of nature, and that understanding the relationship between nature and humankind holds the key to solving the environmental crisis. Engaging the work of Kant, Hegel, Descartes, Rousseau, and Heidegger, among others, Kirkman reveals the relational worldview as an unreliable basis for knowledge and truth claims, and, more dangerously, as harmful to the intellectual sources from which it takes inspiration."

Rethinking Rape
Anne Cahill
(Cornell University Press, 2001)
"A readable and well-researched book on feminist theories that have guided our strategies on rape (Brownmiller -- rape = violence, not sex; and MacKinnon -- because of compulsory heterosexuality, rape exists on the continuum of heterosexual sex). She describes how neither position gets us very far and argues for new  nterpretations of rape based on feminist theories of embodiment. Rape, therefore, can be understood as violation of feminine bodily integrity and a pervasive threat to identity. This provocative book will re-draw our attention to rape as a central concern for feminist activism."

The Kantian Subject:
Sensus Communis, Mimesis, Work of Mourning
Tamar Japaridze
(SUNY Press, 1999)
"Japaridze demonstrates an impressive grasp of the Kantian corpus and makes unexpected connections across a wide array of primary texts. ... Japaridze's reading strategy is extremely interesting: against prevailing accounts of Kant as having defended the pure status of a self-sufficient and autonomous ego, she argues that Kant's conception of the subject is radically dependent on 'traces of the other.' Sublime Understanding: Aesthetic Reflection in Kant and Hegel
Kirk Pillow
(MIT Press, 2000)
"The topic of the sublime is making a return to contemporary discourse on aesthetics and cognition. In Sublime Understanding , Kirk Pillow makes sublimity the center of an alternative conception of  aesthetic response and interpretation. He draws an aesthetics of sublimity from Kant's Critique of Judgment , bolsters it with help from Hegel, and establishes its place in a broadened conception of human understanding (thus differing from the many scholars who use Hegel to dismiss Kant or vice versa)."

The Vegetative Soul: From Philosophy of Nature to Subjectivity in the Feminine
Elaine Miller
(SUNY Press, 2002)
"The Vegetative Soul demonstrates that one significant resource for the postmodern critique of subjectivity can be found in German Idealism and Romanticism, specifically in the philosophy [of] a plant-like subjectivity. The vision of the human being as plant combats the now familiar conception of the modern subject as atomistic, autonomous, [...] and freedom from nature. Reading Kant, Goethe, Hölderlin, Hegel, and Nietzsche, Miller [reveals overlooked ideas from] nineteenth-century German thought, [drawing out] an alternative plantlike [understanding of individuation and subjectivity] that emphasizes interdependence, vulnerability, and metamorphosis. [...] The idea of the vegetative subject takes the traditional alignment of the feminine with nature and the earth and subverts and transforms it into a positive possibility. Although the roots of this alternative conception of subjectivity can be found in Kant's third Critique and its legacy in nineteenth-century Naturphilosophie, the work of Luce Irigaray brings it to fruition. "

Hegel: A Biography
Terry Pinkard
(Cambridge, 2000)
"The portrait which emerges wins sympathy and understanding. Pinkard frees Hegel from the obscurity that unfairly clouds his memory and shows him, stunningly, for who he really was: an early modern version of ourselves."

The Only Girl In The Car
[memoir]
Kathy Dobie
(Dial Press, 2002)
"Kathy Dobie writes of herself as a girl out of control. That girl who looked so frantically for love has been rewarded, at last, by the woman who writes a prose so fine that she leaves the reader breathless with pleasure."
-- Richard Rodrigues,
author of Hunger of Memory

"This is the most honest, unflinshing account of the sexuality of an adolescent girl I've ever read. Kathy Dobie treads fearlessly into that undiscovered country."
-- Haven Kimmel,
author of A Girl Named Skippy
